Unit 1: Best practices to be plastic-free
You can easily start your plastic-free lifestyle with the small and minimal changes you make every day. These small changes can level up to big ones and make a huge difference to the world and the Earth. Remember though, you don’t have to do them all at once, take them one at a time and slowly. Take your time and adapt, and every time you do so, you become more conscious and are on your plastic-free path!
Here are some best practices that can help you become plastic-free:
- Refuse single-use plastic: This is the most important step in reducing plastic waste. Say no to plastic bags, straws, utensils, bottles, and packaging whenever possible.
- Choose sustainable alternatives: Opt for reusable or sustainable alternatives, such as cloth bags, stainless steel water bottles, bamboo utensils, and glass food containers.
- Use natural personal care products: Many personal care products come in plastic containers. Switch to natural products, such as shampoo bars, toothpaste tablets, and deodorant sticks in paper or glass containers.
- Avoid packaged food: Processed foods often come in plastic packaging. Choose fresh fruits and vegetables and make your own meals from scratch whenever possible.
- Compost food waste: Food waste that ends up in the landfill produces methane, a potent greenhouse gas. Composting food waste instead reduces greenhouse gas emissions and creates nutrient-rich soil for gardening.
- Support businesses with sustainable practices (and those local ones): Choose to support businesses that prioritize sustainability, such as those that use renewable energy, reduce waste, and use eco-friendly packaging.
Remember, being plastic-free is a journey, not a destination!
