Description of the Green Initiative

Target groups

People are invited to become Citizen Scientists. If you find discarded trash while hiking in the high mountains, you can become a Citizen Scientist. Collect the plastic waste and document it via the app.

Objectives

The Dreckspotz - App now serves as a central research tool. They want to free our nature from litter and keep it clean sustainably. They inform and collect data together to find long-term solutions to the littering problem. The users of the app receive information about the dangers of litter in nature and find information about the environmental impact of the following categories of litter (Plastic&rubber, metal, glass&ceramics, electrical, paper, textiles and cigarettes).

Description

The research project "PlasticAlps" of the University of Innsbruck (Institut of Ecology) focuses on plastic waste in high mountains. The collaboration of the "DreckSpotz" app with the "PlasticAlps" project enables the scientific investigation of the littering problem in the supposedly untouched high mountains.

Impact

The three-year research project PlasticAlps of the University of Innsbruck, Institute of Ecology (funded by the Austrian Exchange Service) aims to raise awareness about the global plastic challenge together with the Austrian Alpine Association and Friends of Nature. In the Tyrolean mountains, children and young people get to know sensitive high alpine habitats and investigate the impact of plastic pollution on the glacier ecosystem.

Innovative elements

Citizen Science, Environmental Protection and Volunteer Monitoring

Transferability

The cooperation between GLOBAL 2000 DreckSpotz App and PlasticAlps of the University of Innsbruck is not only intended to make our nature a little cleaner, but also to ensure that it stays that way in the long term. With the app, Citizen Scientists can help collect data to develop long-term solutions for the waste problem.
