Objectives

The objectives of the campaign are:

  • to raise awareness among young people about the plastic waste reduction
  • to contribute to the research on the pollution of water
  • to emphasize the international research collaboration
  • to develop solutions for the prevention and reduction of marine and riverine pollution.

Description

The Plastic Pirates – Go Europe campaign aims to motivate young people and students to reduce plastic waste. The young participants collect plastic waste items from streams and rivers, while researchers analyze their findings. In addition, the campaign offers dissemination material (posters, videos, leaflets) and activities for school students and teachers, thus increasing their evolvement and knowledge in plastic waste reduction.

Impact

Since the beginning of the campaign in 2016, more than 15,000 young people have participated and, consequently, are motivated to reduce their plastic waste. From 2016 until now, 513 locations across Europe in an area of overall 32,097m2 have been searched for plastic waste. In this area, 15,566 plastic materials have been collected.

Innovative elements

The campaign engages young people and students in scientific research, more attractively and interactively. Also, it involves the school's education on the issue, motivating young people to adopt a more eco-friendly way of thinking. The abovementioned elements enhance the innovation of the project.

Transferability

The campaign includes not only plastic waste collection but also dissemination material, such as posters, leaflets, videos, and activity sheets. These materials can be adapted and used accordingly to any stakeholders’ needs, in various contexts and places and at any time.
